The Telegraph has a great excerpt from Raising the Dead by Philip Finch. The book is about the recovery of the body of Deon Dreyer a full 10 years after his death in Boesmansgat (Bushman’s Hole).
The excerpt covers a single dive, down to 250 meters - a depth that has only been reached by a handful of people. (More people have walked on the moon than have gone that deep and survived.)
“Shirley glanced down, but he already knew what he would see: the Hammerhead [a closed-circuit controller and dive computer] was dark. It had imploded under the pressure of the depth and was now flooded, the electronics ruined.”
They also have an article covering the history and adventures of the two men, from their days crop-dusting up to their 2 fateful dives in a freshwater cave called Boesmansgat (Bushman’s Hole). On the first dive, after setting 4 world records and decending 270 meters below the surface, Shaw found the body of Deon Dreyer and attempted a recovery. When that failed, they planned a new attempt and returned a few months later.
The excerpt covers much of that second attempt, and is a compelling read for anyone interested in extreme technical diving.
