Back on July 24, Ecuador’s President Correa issued a decree legalizing the sale of shark fins from sharks caught as by-catch.
In theory it is illegal to specifically target sharks or to fish anywhere in the Galapagos waters, but enforcement is difficult. Ricardo Buitron, Ecological Action project coordinator, said he believes the decree could entice fisherman to enter the protected waters and specifically targeting sharks for their fins.
The External Relations Minister stated that the new decree will make shark fin sales more transparent and put an end to the black market.
